Crichton can write a decent page turner, but his books always leave me thinking "with a little bit more this would be excellent". Oh well!

Michael Crichton is a mixed bag; Some of his writing, like Timeline, is absolutely wonderful, others, like Prey, are pretty poor when it comes to the writing department. His writing and characters varies from high above average to worse than many children's books. What you really read Crichton for is the science. I hope the reviewer who said that Michael Crichton isn't serious science fiction is a fan of true masters of the craft like Orwell and William Gibson, and not a fan of those stupid paperback Star Wars type novels, because Michael Crichton is real science fiction. His books are all very well researched, and so even his worst *cough*Prey*cough* are always worth a read. If you're a nerd you'll love him, if you aren't you will probably enjoy some of his books, but not all.

Chrichton writes stories above all else, he can spin a yarn so convincing in it's own right that it hardly even needs a premise! That being said, Chrichton's topics, nearly all sci-fi are often relevent, if fantastic, well researched, if not fully explored, and always packed with action potential. I'd have to say that his characters are often stereotypical, if not in their speciffics, almost always in their roles. (hereo, villian, smart-guy, smart-alec, scientist, etc.) If his comercial sucess (Jurassic Park anyone?) weren't proof enough, just pick up a Crichton novel and start having fun.

Crichton does not write novels, he writes screenplays. No serious sci-fi affictionado takes these books seriously.
