My favourite author ever. I've only read A Song of Ice and Fire, but I'm interested in reading some of his other works if I get the time. Having read ASoIaF, however, I can tell you that he's not afraid to do anything, and yes, that includes brutally killing off a major character that everyone likes. Plus, his writing style is very easy to read, without being too simple and boring either.
I just dream of having this guy's talent.

Well, I just signed on to be a member, i'm so happy I found this forum, I've wanted to share my absolute excitment by having read George R. Martins saga "A song of ice and fire" - my first fantasy read - now I don't want to read anything else! His new book due out in October '05 is ordered and paid for...

Hmm. Martin's books are the best fantasy ever written.

Better than Tolkien.

Feel free to disagree with me, but I tell you what: Just go to Amazon and read the reviews for his A Song of Ice and Fire series for yourself. Then go pick up your first copy of A Game of Thrones and prepare to be blown away.

Oh, how I envy you.

Fantastic series. Robert Jordan and George R.R Martin both share a flair for factual correctness and exactitude. A Song Of Ice And Fire has been a masterpiece thus far, and I certainly hope that "A Feast for Crows" lives up to the series' past reputation.
A must read if you are a fantasy fan,

A sword of ice and fire is simply the best fantasy series I've read to date.

His character development is spectacular, plus he's not afraid to kill off major characters. His word is also richly developed, and the different cultures are meshes a lot more realistically then any other fantasy author I've seen. He doesn't fall to the use of stereotypes nearly so often as most authors. His system of magic is much more conservative and realistic then most authors giving his world a much more realistic feel. I love the fact that he tells the story without introducing dozens of 'invincible' items, powers, or people.

Quite frankly, I've yet to meet a fantasy fan who did not love Martin.
