Terry Pratchett, what can I say? ... PLEASE STOP WRITING!

I'm sorry, I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me on this one but I can't stand him. However this has not always been the case. I used to read him. In fact I have read about 18 of his books from the first one onwards in order as he wrote them. I found them funny if simplistic and written with a kind of smug, "I'm really clever" air to them. But come on Terry. Time to call it a day. Throw in the towel. Move on! How many of these things are you going to write? Can we say HACK? He reminds of an irritating uncle that tells you a joke and you laugh. Then he tells you it again and you chuckle. he tells you again and you smile. after the 200th time he tells you and you want to him with a stick! How many times will he write the SAME old tired jokes? The same old tired characters in the same old tired locations. PLEASE Terry. Just. Stop? Please? Also it makes me cringe when people say his books are deep, meaningful and philosophical. Books like Small Gods for example. OH so you mean that religion comes down to power and ritual instead of true spirituality? REALLY? I would never have guessed that at all. Thanks a lot Terry. PLUS in his early days he said he would never make maps and mugs and so on for the discworld... Hmmm is all I can say. Nanny Ogg cookbook anybody? Street map of Morpock perhaps? Can we say say sell out hack? hhhh hhhh hhh OK RANT OVER. I just had to get that out of my system dammit! He WAS funny before he had written about 30 of the damn things! His books are light and mildly entertaining BUT THAT'S IT! Nothing more. he is a hack and about as deep as a frogs finger bowl! wow, I think I need a lie down or something...

A latter-day philosopher who eschews the old practices of livng in barrels and/or on top of poles and instead devotes himself to his fan-base by producing a regular supply of top-quality books, and still finds time to sign books, speak and electronically converse with the huddled masses. I believe he's due for a holiday.

His works have clearly developed, and may well have guided my own tastes, but the shear breadth of subject-matter covered means that almost everyone should be able to find something to appreciate. Humour and parody has been the basis of his works, but does not detract from the observations of the human condition that are portrayed (or reflected) in some of his most profound works.

From the purely fantastical to the sly observations of contemporary culture, I have never found a book to disapoint. Though your standards and expectations are unlikely to be the same as mine, somewhere in his collected works you will find a gem that suits you, and from this gem you may well be led into the well-trodden path towards the appreciation of Terry Pratchett.

In my humble opinion, Terry is the most prominent author in the new fantasy genre, which come to think of it, he almost invented, if you take out Saki that is. I personnaly think that combining humour, fantasy and a heavy dosage of cynicism is the best way to reach an audience which does not need to be reminded of the reality, but not be very far away from it either. A big well done from here, and I will let you know when I try out the recipes in the cookbook, with extra gravel.

Terry Pratchet is very funny. His books are all very unique. He is constantly lampooning the whole fantasy genre. Worth checking out whether you are a fantasy fan or not.

One of the greatest fantasy writers. His "comments" in the discworld novels are hilarious and the way he describes characters, is something only Pratchett can do.

Terry Pratchett is funny, deep, interesting, witty, funny, insightful, and a nice guy. I was introduced to his work through a friend of mine in early 1992 and I have been a fanatical devotee ever since. Discworld is his alternate universe carried on the back of 4 elephants carried through space on the back of a giant turtle, and that's just the beginning. Discworld is a place where all of the little assumptions and substitions (things that are true, but nobody believes in) come to life; Death is a tall skeleton with a black robe that SPEAKS IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. The gods control the fates of men, but usually can't be bothered. Wizards tend toward the heavy side and need a rest with a cold cloth on their head after a difficult spell. And million to one chances come up nine times out of ten.
These books touch on basic themes of what it means to be human and how what we do and how we act have weight and value and purpose.
READ Terry Pratchett, you will laugh so hard that you have trouble catching your breath, you will find yourself gripping the book in excitement, you will feel your eyes well up with tears, and you will be a better person. If that sounds like hyperbole, it is not. I am not worried about setting your expectations too high, because that would be impossible.
