Comments on Anne McCaffrey

I love McCaffrey's writing when she manages to write novels without clear evil forces. Many of her books in the Pern series are like this. And when her blend of sf and romance comes off well (like in the first three brainship books), her novels are really exemplary. However, she does have some recurring patterns that become boring -- children being kidnapped by ...gasp... evil people, the lonely, powerful, yet secretly vulnerable young woman finally finding an older man to love her (see The Rowan, etc) and people having lots of babies. I have no children, and I know she does, but I find it inconcievable how all the women in her stories are delighted to find they are pregnant -- because, of course, they have somebody else to take care of the kids for them so they can continue on with their normal lives. I wish. The best tip I can offer about McCaffrey is her books are usually better at the beginning of a series. After a while in one world she tends to change her mind about things and the series changes in tone, usually for the worse.

Memo to McCaffrey, lay off your addiction to: evil bug aliens, friendly little furry aliens, villains kidnapping and enslaving children, and excessive babymaking.

Overall, I've really loved a few of McCaffrey's books and enjoyed others. A few I found dissapointing. So I wouldn't go out and read absolutely everything she wrote.

Someone commented once that McCaffrey is basically a romance writer who wants to be a science fiction writer...the more I think about this the more true it seems.
