| Swedish author, debuted with ''Gösta Berlings saga'' in 1897, contracted by the Swedish government's department of church and education to write a reading and geography textbook, resulting in the novel ''Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige'' (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils), 1906-1907. Recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1909.
