| We read "Rappacinni's Daughter" in English class and it was my first introduction to Hawthorne. I was immediately hooked and wanted to read more. Within a few days I had read all the other short stories by Hawthorne in our textbook and had gone out and bought myself more of his work. I don't understand why people say The Scarlet Letter is so difficult. The writing is not heavy and artificial and ponderous like some 18th century writing; it is rich and beautiful and full of symbolism. Hawthorne is the sort of writer that makes me think, I wish I could write like that. |
