Well I just purchased and read the collected amber books which have been released in one big book. I have to say that I remember reading these books a long time ago and remember liking them alot. However upon re-reading them I would have to say that they are a little scattered and disjointed. A little slow too. However, this might be just because the are forced to go back over alot of information that has been covered in previous books with each new book. Lets just say that I caught myself getting a little impatient for something to "happen".

My favorite fantasy series. You are in the world, you are in the world. I read these when I was about 10, and have read them a couple times since, and have listened to the very well done audio versions (read by the author, with sound effects, etc)
I recommond all of these books for anyone, especially young people just getting introduced to fantasy via Harry Potter that need another series to become addicted to.

The first 5 books are very well done. Enjoyable, wonderful concept.
Subtle writing, with a sense of humour.

The second 5 which are written from the perspective of another character are not so good. They lack the same sense of progression. They deal too much with power and not so much with the subtlety.

Read them all, otherwise you'll wonder what you missed, but it's unlikely you will read the last 5 again.

Brilliant books, all ten of them. The first five are more energetic and impulsive, while the second five bear more philosophical meanings and complex plot twists. Still, both halves are equal in value. Personally, these books are my favorite novels of all time.

The premise of this series is brilliant although somewhat dated by now. The hero (Corwin, crown-prince of Amber) awakens in a 'sanatorium' with no memory other than the fact that he is wrongly instituted. He proceeds to escape, and undergoes a harrowing ordeal to recover his lost memories - discovering along the way that this 'Earth' is but a shadow of the true world 'Amber' - and that he is able to traverse 'shadows' to achieve any reality he desires! Then there is his jaded and aloof family, some friend some foe, who strive to keep him from regaining all his memories and attaining his True Goal: The Crown of Amber!
I found the first three books to be the best, the later add-ons lack the vision. Still, a great read and one of my all-time top three fantasy favorites!
