One comment I feel I must make. I see King books with references to the Tower, Mid-World and/or Roland have begun seeping into the DT series page.<P>These aren't Dark Tower books. Just about all of Steven King's books have Dark Tower references in them. If you read the various intros and forewords to the Dark Tower books he explains why. So don't be fooled. The only Dark Tower books are the ones that are numbered. The rest are just his regular stuff.

This series marks the crowning achievement of King's powerful imagination. He has given birth to a world that seems to have been breathing its last breaths, a world that is caving in on itself. A world that has moved on.

The last Gunslinger Roland Deschain is the hardest character I have ever encountered in the reading of fiction, and mostly its because he is hard in a believable sort of way. Hints thrown to us as small scraps, and witnessing how he treats the friendship of Jake in the first book, give us insight into how badly this man's obsession with his quest is.

The proximity of his world to ours, the way it touches and seems to overlap at times, gives the entirety of mid world a sort of haunted feeling, and its very hard for the reader to get a grasp of the reality of this series, because it doesn't seem to be a very solid thing.

I intend to review each book, so I am not going to go into too much detail, but for anyone who likes king, or likes good solid and original fantasy this is the series for you. I started reading this series in the 80's and here it is now over ten years later and even though only 4 books are out so far, I have waited patiently because those four books were so good. If any other author had made me wait, I wouldn't have, but I need see Roland and his Ka-tet make their stand at the nexus of King's Universe, the Dark Tower.

P.S. the last 3 books will all be published within the next year or so.
