I read this book when I was still living in Cuba, during the 80s. A friend of mine, an artist who was allowed to travel abroad, brought me the trilogy as a present, knowing I was a big fan of fantasy & sf books... It was love at first sight. It was such an amazing universe full of adventure, the power of friendship and the magic of the elves. After all these years, it’s still one of greatest fantasy books I’ve ever read.

Lord of the Rings is such an excellent but also old-fashioned collection of an epic adventure. It is also hard to focus yourself into this series, but you will make it after some tryings and it will be worth it all... Lord of the rings is such an outstanding collection of stories... You wont experience a similar epic adventure in any other book.

I don't understand what's to like about this series. I read the first two books, and as far as I'm concerned, I'd like about two days of my life back. I see nothing here to appreciate. The characters are flat and poorly developed, the background world is over-developed at the expense of things like, you know, a plot that moves at a decent pase and characters I care about. What's the point of inventing an entire language? Sure, either the author was much smarter than me or had far too much spare time, but honestly...I DON'T CARE. You can create all the world you want, but if you can't create a character that the reader can identify with and feel for, than all is lost. Maybe, if I cared about the characters involved, I wouldn't notice how silly the plot is. It's standard 1940s fantasy tripe dressed up in overly intellectual clothes. I'm convinced that the only reason these books are selling at all is because our entire society believes that if they admit that these books are terrible, everyone else will laugh at them and call them "stupid-head". It's like we're all back in grade 3, afraid to speak out against the "majority" opinion because then everyone will beat us up in the playground. Thus, I'll be the first to take a stand: I didn't see the movies, the books I read came from a library, and I will never take part in the lord of the rings hype because...lord of the rings is a *bad series*. I feel better now. I'm going to go hide behind the teacher.

LOTR is an absolute classic. Initially, it dragged.. cribbed and cursed about how slow it was and almost stopped reading it. Am so glad I finished it. Tolkien is my new God now..
Cheers~

I want to add a caveat to the rave reviews of Lord of the Rings: whatever else it is, it is not an easy read, and not necessarily an easy book to appreciate. Don’t get me wrong, I happen to adore Lord of the Rings, but I think many people struggle with the book and are disappointed in themselves for not liking such a ‘seminal’ work, without giving themselves credit for the difficulty of the task.

Tolkien's Middle Earth is a very detailed world with a lot of background legends and history. The books themselves have good action and plotting. The characters could probably use some more depth and development though. Tolkien's writing style probably isn't for everyone; it can be a bit slow and difficult to get into at times. Where Tolkien really shines is the detail in creating his world and the entire mythos for the world. Tolkien was a linguistic scholar, and started devloping his own languages. He decided that in order to make his languages real, they needed people and background stories. Thus elves and The Lord of the Rings were born! 8/10

THE standard for fantasy and one of the most influential series of books ever. Not to mention talking trees and the eternal struggle between good and evil.

What's not to like?
