Series: Julie Hayes
Part: 4

Summary (From the publisher):

Julie is in trouble from page one: Jeff, her husband, tells her he wants a divorce. Hurt and angry, she flees the apartment and stirdes across the far West Side of Manhattan that Sunday morning, unheeding of where she is until, in a wasteland of demolition and new construction, without a soul in sight, she thinks she hears a child crying.

It is a doll, a decoy. Julie is caught, dragged into a trailer, and raped by two men.

Julie never wants to see the men again, but bit by bit, she is persuaded to help in their pursuit. The police believe them to be local youths from a neighborhood where she is well-known and liked. Julie is also persuaded, by way of healing the wound of Jeff's rejection, finally to undertake a search for the father she never knew.

When the search leads Julie to Ireland, she begins to see some strange connections between her past and present. The land of her beloved Yeats and her lost father becomes the center of the storm. And always, in the background, is the gangster, Sweets Romano, who watches over Julie in his own sometimes tender, sometimes violent way.
