Professor Gervase Fen, from Oxford, is temporarily employed as a consultant on a film biography of Alexander Pope; and when, on arrival at the studios, he is greeted by his old friend Inspecter Humbleby of the Yard, brought in to investigate the suicide of a bit player, the reader knows he's on familiar ground. But even the presence of two such distinguished detectives cannot stop murder running its course.
