When she dies in an "accident", Travis and Meyer dig into the details of a sordid story of land exploitation and political corruption, with drug smuggling to sweeten the pot. There is comic relief in the form of a copacetic complex of pot-sweetened singles with a charismatic leader, but you know the bad guy is gonna turn out to be a...lawyer? Right the first time. The live girl in the case is newly widowed Cindy Birdsong, marina owner, whose husband was probably done in by the same shady operation that killed McGee's friend Carrie, and who is up for some of that patented McGee consolation.
