(IBList user synopsis):
Autobiographical novel about WWII and the early post-war years in a small town in Germany. Told from the perspective of a child, but tinged with the ironic voice of the adult he would become, the novel shows the narrator's transformation from dedicated Nazi youth and would-be soldier to a mature citizen of American-occupied Germany.
One of the first books after the war by an author who confronted his own Nazi past, the novel has been translated into several languages.
