At 15, Alexandra is thrilled to be dating Cliff, a popular, athletic senior with dark good looks. Cliff, however, tends to be very possessive. He's annoyed when she spends time with friends or talks to other boys- but she sees that as a sign of how much he loves her. Sometimes he gets angry and hits her, but she excuses him because maybe she provoked those feelings in him, and he is very apologetic afterward. Yet as Cliff's violence grows to extremes, even Alex comes to realize that there is a point at which no excuses are good enough and no apologies can work.
In Past Forgiving, popular author Gloria D. Miklowitz again tackles a subject seemingly ripped from the headlines of today's newspapers: date violence and rape. Her story is as compelling as it is honest in its exploration of how love can go wrong.
