It was simple for an operator like Barney Godwin. The fall guy was a hermit. Crazy, they said. No friends, except a girl in a fishing camp who sold him groceries. A bug for detective magazines. One case especially. Wild Bill Haig. Haig was the guy who disappeared into thin air. With one hundred and sixty-eight thousand dollars. Haig never did show. But some of his money did. And Godwin knew where it came from. A hermit. Who lived in the woods. Godwin could search thirty-two thousand acres of timber and underbrush and swamp. Or he could get a little friendly with the hermit and his one human contact, the fishing camp girl, who'd do anything for Godwin...if he'd just get her out of there.
