Summary (From the publisher):

This copy contains most of the stories that Pinera published during his lifetime as well as some that were found among his papers after his death. None of them have ever appeared in English. Pinera's writing is shocking and often absurd: his lyrical and bloody metaphors take the reader through most of our contemporary infernos; his prose is ironic and incisive, at once tropical and cold, somewhere between tragedy and farce. He transforms the most unreal reality into startling lucidity. The tone that prevails, as in many of Ionesco and Beckett's plays, is that of inescapable fate. A sharp scepticism takes the form of perverse innocence, and it is the ridicule -- Pinera's macabre excesses -- more than the horrid, that shocks the reader.
