Summary (From the publisher):

Setting out on foot, singly or in pairs, from war-shattered Berlin in the midsummer of 1945, and as if guided by some mystical force that will reveal itself only later, a motley group of wayfarers converges outside the city on a road leading to the east. Their common destination, as it turns out, is the village of Anastasiendorf (village of the Resurrection), the seat of an ancient convent presided over by a young abbess of legendary wisdom and sanctity. The single question in each of their minds is: What is the meaning of life? -- and against an external action of stark and devastating reality it is the steady illumination of this question that infuses The Quest with its deeper meaning.
