Summary (From the publisher):

That exceptionally gifted detective-story writer Anthony Gilbert is undoubtedly at his best in this superbly exciting story. It concerns the strange adventure of Nora Deane, a young nurse, who has been instructed to report at 12 Askew Avenue, Charlbury, to look after a new patient. Nora stepped out of the station to find herself in an impenetrable blanket of fog. She was glad to accept the escort of an unknown young man to the required address. Then, alone in the darkness, she pressed the bell and waited. She shivered. Suddenly she was frightened. Nothing seemed to matter but that she should get inside, out of the dangers of the dark. And yet some inner voice seemed to warn her insistently not to cross the threshold of that sinister house. Don't Open the Door! is a fine detective story, and features, of course, the egregious Mr. Arthur Crook.
