Charley and Jack, two undergraduate Oxford students, are expecting a visit from an aunt they have never met. They take advantage of the visit to invite their girlfriends over for the weekend, knowing they will be properly chaperoned by Charley's elderly aunt. When they receive a letter from the aunt, postponing her trip, instead of cancelling the visit they convince a male friend to masquerade as the aunt.
First performed at Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds on 29 February 1892; opened in London at the Royalty Theatre on 21 December 1892, transferred to the Globe Theatre where it ran for four years; opened on Broadway at the Standard Theatre on 2 October 1893, where it ran for four years.
