Emmett Glanton receives an urgent plea from a neighbour, John Bruckman, only to find that Bruckman wants him to immediately marry his young niece and ward. Why is Bruckman so anxious to sever all responsibility to the girl? Is it something to do with Joshua, the lumbering halfwit who works for him... or has some misdemeanour from his past finally caught up with him?
