Robert Wolff blows a strange horn in an empty house and is transported to a ziggurat-shaped planet of levels upon levels, where he encounters Podarge, the venomous eagle-woman, and Kickaha the Trickster, another displaced Earthman, with whose help he sets out on a quest to the topmost tier, hoping to confront the god or madman who created the world.
