Michael and Laura, two recently dead young people, meet as ghosts in a shady, neglected cemetery and fall in love. They make friends with a hermit, Mr. Rebeck, who lives in a mausoleum, fed by a foul-mouthed raven to whom he can talk for the same reason he can see and talk to ghosts: he has abandoned the living world. But Rebeck's retreat is about to be interrupted by the attractive, abrasive, enormously vital widow Klapper--and soon all their relationships with the world will change.
