Summary (From the publisher):

Rupert Darley has resolved his midlife crisis with an uncharacteristically bold stroke. When, out of duty, he visits his elderly parents to announce he has abandoned his job and his marriage, he recognizes for the first time in many years a sense of freedom, even of hope. Yet each of his parents also has important and pressing news, which both are curiously reluctant to impart to their son.

Oliver, Rupert's father, has recently completed plans for a huge pyramid city, "Darley's Folly", as some would have it. And his wife, May, once a woman of great energy and activity, has fulfilled her modest expectations of life and is ready to die. Each is a forceful and highly idiosyncratic character, and each has made plans that do not include Rupert. Almost at once Rupert realizes he has arrived at the wrong moment. And to his surprise he discovers the person in whom his parents intend to confide is his own daughter Miranda, a young medical student still uncertain of her place in the world. As these four people, intently pursuing four different paths, come together in one house, they embody just what a family is: separate entities that are inextricably linked, individuals with a common identity.

May and Oliver, ever squabbling, share a profound bond that few people will ever know; but their differences in temperament and outlook will have consequences beyond their imagining. Rupert, who has entered middle age disappointed but not defeated by life, is confronted with his own past in a photograph of himself as a child, self-confident and ready to conquer the world. And Miranda, detached and rational, is transformed into a woman of compassion and understanding by a sudden tragedy that the rest, with all their plans, haven't counted on.

  • "Compulsively readable. Mr. Gloag is in stunning command throughout. His prose is literate and richly evocative; his various and varied characters are fascinating and fully realized. True psychological suspense." Evan Hunter, The New York Times Book Review
  • "Gloag comes across as a real original, a kind of weird, fascinating offspring of Jane Austen and Harold Pinter." Richard Lipez, The Washington Post
