During the Spanish Civil War, an American Loyalist counterespionage specialist is overseeing the guarding of a recent prisoner. The prisoner is a member of the Fifth Column, a group of local fascists deemed traitors. With his partner Max, a German agent, they hope to gain information that can lead to the capture of other members of the Fifth Column.

Originally published in the collection The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories, 1938; first published on its own in 1940.
