Summary :

Behind the main shoppping center was a row of pokey little houses -- Cumberland Place -- and it was here that Jenny Hawthorn and her father came to live. With them came Thomas, Jenny's cat, although pets were strictly forbidden.

All too soon, Thomas surprised Jenny by presenting her with four kittens. How could she possibly hide them from the landlord and her father, who would both say they must be destroyed? Molly and Barty offered to help, and the patch of wasteland between the backyard and the railroad crossing was made into a home for the cat and her family.

It was a deadly secret, and would have remained so had not Artie Pusey arrived for a visit. Soon Artie found out the secret and threatened to give them away. How could they stop him without bringing more trouble on themselves?

But then Artie got into trouble, too...
