Summary (From the publisher):

This novel is the story of Doug Gardner, witty, sensitive, worldly-wise, and a man whose life is falling apart. A combatant in the battle of the sexes, he must cope with the problems of joint custody, sharing his teenage son and daughter with his liberated ex-wife. His job as a sports columnist is threatened by a culture that values celebrity and spectacle over sportsmanship. His love life is a series of chance and brief encounters. And to top it all off, he is facing 50.

Where does Doug fit in this world of yuppies, singles bars, the fast track and the bottom line? To him, it is a world of big dollars, little minds, and no memories of Joe DiMaggio and Ira Gershwin. He feels embattled, bemused, betrayed, until he is at last compelled, through a memorable progression of sometimes hilarious, sometimes bittersweet events, to come to terms with his past, with his future and with himself.
