During the Feast of Lanterns the accidental death of an old beggar is reported to Judge Dee. After witnessing the beggar's "ghost" walk through his hall he decides to inspect the body - and discovers the deceased was no beggar... and his death was no accident. First published in the collection Judge Dee at Work (1967) Also appears in the anthology The Mammoth Book of Historical Detectives (1995)
