When Kit's grandfather dies, she finds herself faced with hefty debts and no way of repaying them -- short of selling all of her things and leaving the land she's grown up in.
Her mother's sister and her husband live in America, and the idea of going to a new place is exciting; so Kit boards a ship from Barbados and goes to live with them, sending no notice for fear of being refused.
Kit is not ready for America, and the small town her aunt and uncle inhabit is not ready for her. She has a miserable time until she becomes friends with an unlikely trio -- an elderly Quaker woman, a young sailor, and a little girl from the town whom she teaches to read.
But the Quaker woman is called a witch behind her back, and the townspeople's suspicions soon shift to Kit as well...
