(From the publisher):
"This is the last night of the year and I have sat here alone by the fire while my dear husband is out and about, and in thinking over how much has happened in the last twelve months I have resolved to keep a journal, and it will be private. And I shall keep it hidden and it will be mine alone, and I shall say whatever I like. So that on days and nights like these, it will be company of sorts..."
So begins the Journal of Elizabeth Pepys, wife of celebrated diarist Samuel, the story of a marriage, based on love, that ironically, when the two began to achieve the measure of prosperity for which both had struggled, almost foundered. But, through the hurt, betrayal and anger, Elizabeth survived, as did her marriage - until her death at the age of twenty-nine, just when she and Samuel had finally achieved a hard-fought-for equilibrium.
