Jerome Corbett was a "corpsicle," a person who, on the verge of death, had himself frozen in hopes that future scientists would develop a cure for cancer. When he wakes up, it's in a new body, and he finds himself being trained for a difficult and lonely job by a far from paternal State. First published in Galaxy Magazine.
