Summary (From the publisher):

The time is after the first Punic War, when Carthage was besieged by the unpaid mercenaries. Their leader is Matho, a superb Libyan giant, who loves Salammbo, priestess in the temple of the goddess Tanit, and daughter of Hamilcar, the Carthaginian leader. Matho enters Carthage by stealth and steals from Salammbo's guardianship the sacred veil of Tanit. For a time the fate of Carthage is in the balance and the High Priest commands Salammbo to retrieve the stolen treasure. Salammbo goes to Matho's tent and gives herself to him in return for the veil.
