(IBList user synopsis):
Cecelia and her daughter arrive at an inn near the residence of the Baroness Stella, where the daughter is going to become her companion. But it soon becomes clear that Cecelia has secrets which she is not telling and that both women's lives are entangled in the infidelity of a single man.
Goethe's original version of the play, performed in 1776, had a happy ending. He revised it in 1806, giving it a more conventional tragic turn which ends with the death of several of the characters. This is the version usually printed.
