First published in 1855 as a Preface (the famous Manifesto for a New American Poetry) and a dozen following poems (starting with the poem that would later be called "Song of Myself"), Leaves of Grass would be a expanded and revised throughout the author's lifetime, with the final edition appearing shortly before Whitman's death in 1892.
