The TARDIS carries the Doctor and Ace far back into the Forbidden Times, when the Pythia ruled Gallifrey and Rassilon was a renegade engineer who forsaw a great change in Gallifrey's interaction with the rest of the galaxy.
The Doctor and Ace find themselves caught in a trap but in breaking out of it, and rescuing a crew of chronauts from Gallifrey, they find themselves caught in the Pythia's dying curse that would enfold the planet for untold millennia
