The September 11 attack on the United States of America brought Victoria Murray, an Army reservist who works as a Personnel Officer for the US Army Command to a
crossroads in her professional and personal life. She is forty-three, a twenty-year military veteran, and she has achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, grade 5, the highest rank a Warrant Officer can achieve. She is also the first African-American female ever to earn that rank. While proud of her professional
accomplishments, Victoria also carries some regrets. She has never married and has no children, because she has yet to experience or share the love of a good man. Currently stationed in Atlanta, GA, Victoria is seriously considering retiring from the Army. Like all Americans, she wants to do her part to help bring those responsible for the attack to justice, however, her age makes her undeployable as a soldier, which adds to her feelings of powerlessness.
Gregory Hunter is well versed in leading a double life. By day, he is a college-professor who teaches at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. However, his real job is as a special agent with the National Security Agency (NSA), one of the most secret (and secretive) organizations in the U.S. intelligence community. Gregory has been an agent for twenty years, and he is an expert on Asian (particularly the Middle East) culture and is fluent in several of their languages. His current assignment is to investigate, track, and cut off sources of terrorist funding. For Gregory, the attack on 911 became very personal because he lost his brother and best friend, Gilbert, when the towers fell. Although, determined to bring as many responsible parties to justice as possible, his brother's death hit him hard, which also causes him to reevaluate his priorities and ascertain what is important in life.
Victoria's life is about to change for with the attack also came a restructuring of the military and the creation of a new command to which she has been assigned. What makes this assignment even better is that she will be station in Colorado Springs, the city where her sister, brother-in-law, and two nephews reside. Shortly after arriving in Colorado Springs, Victoria meets Jamilah Abzari, a mutual friend of Gregory, and
a woman whose family and community is being victimized by the very terrorist Gregory is after. Amid threats, blackmail, the deaths of more friends, and arsonists who are targeting the small Muslim community, Gregory and Victoria struggle to
find a balance and the time to pursue a relationship both want, but one that may not come to fruition.
