Beautiful and headstrong Leah Nicole Ellis is a classic workaholic. Burned once by love, her life revolves around her job and the volunteer work she does for Project Spruce, a community service organization that cleans up neighborhoods on Chicago's South side. However, the organization is just about broke and amid threats of bodily harm, missing supplies and the loss of their main Corporate sponsor, the group is planning a fundraiser.
Gerald Tyler Morris has a knack for spotting talented singing groups and propelling them into super star status. His leadership and mastery of the industry helped build one of the largest and most renowned recording studios in the country. Two years ago, he gave it all up and returned to his hometown of Chicago.
Gerald doesn't understand his attraction to Leah, but is compelled to find out why she affects him so deeply. While Leah finds Gerald handsome and self assured, she has no interest in a relationship. She was once engaged to a man thirteen years her senior and his deceit left her leery of men. Gerald's pursuit of Leah turns into a bombardment of romance that weakens her resistance until she surrenders to his charms.
However, Leah and Gerald's problems have only just begun. Someone wants Project Spruce stopped, and a note and found in Leah's burglarized apartment sends Gerald into a state of panic. The note is written on TyJo Productions stationery. TyJo is Gerald's record label, and he is being set up to take the fall. In addition, a bigot is causing Leah problems at work, and Gerald must come to terms with his father, a man he had believed died before his birth.
Unaware of the Gerald's connection to TyJo, Leah struggles against his over protective and controlling nature as she endeavors to teach him that she is a strong and capable woman.
