The first drafts of The Children of Hurin were written around the time of the First World War and although J.R.R. Tolkien came back to it after he finally completed The Lord of the Rings, he never finished this story. His son Christopher has completed the saga, which is set many years before The Lord of the Rings. With illustrations by Alan Lee.
