Eighty years after the Gene Wars devastated the planet, Earth is ruled by the Heads, an oligarchy of once-human brains preserved in glass jars and communicating through computer interfaces. They are aided by Aftermoders, gene-doctored humans who can shift to aquatic form and who share a telepathic link with dolphins.
Then a new interstellar gate is discovered, and the Heads want it investigated. Assigned to the task, Altermoder Jenae Kim stumbles on information which could mean a new beginning for mankind.
But the Heads have their own reasons for wanting to suppress the truth about the Gene Wars – and Jenae has just become a serious threat to their security…
