Summary (From the publisher):

The time is 1920.

The place is Moscow.

The Devil appears with a retinue including a naked girl vampire with red hair and phosphorescent eyes, and a black cat that smokes cigars and is a dead shot with a Browning automatic. But Satan is only one member of a cast of characters that reenacts the Faust myth in a modern idiom.

Here Faust is seen as a Russian novelist of genius who is packed off to a lunatic asylum for having retold the Passion in a way that is unacceptable to the Soviet authorities. Pontius Pilate appears as a baffled autocrat who suffers from psychosomatic headaches. And the Devil is a combination of tempter, sorcerer, and soothsayer -- a figure who brings chaos, insanity, and death to the streets of Moscow.
