Three enigmatic notes from a Panpipe, the lid of an Etruscan sarcophagus, a deep well in the courtyard of a rural estate, a drowned child -- these are but a few of the symbols in a richly woven narrative that ties together the lives of three women. Three Flute Notes explores vital problems confronting women in the contemporary world: finding acceptance as the equals of male counterparts, the difficulty of breaking away from traditional female roles, the often conflicting demands of family and professional existence, definition of self as the product of past experiences, present conditions, and future expectation. As the central characters search for fulfillment they are forced to come to grips both internally and externally with childhood traumas of the past, relationships with other people, and ideas about the world that have made them what they are and will determine their futures.
