Summary (From the publisher):

13-year-old David Grayle dreams of running away from his mothers boardinghouse in the Texas Panhandle. Growing up at the tail end of the 19th century, he fears that the Wild West has been tamed too soon and that his chance for adventure will never come. But arrive it does, stowed in the saddlebags of a convicted killer soon to be dead himself.

David suddenly finds himself heir to a colt's revolver and a map - key to the legendary long-buried loot from a rebel raid gone bad. Joined by the likes of the one eyed snake charmer Benjamin Franklin Wedlock, the bullwhip-wielding Nazaren Pike, and the hell raiser they call the Deacon, young David heads in search of his fate and fortune.

The band is bound for the Black Hills of South Dakota, heart of Sioux country - a place of quick death where the Old West dies hard and where a boy must grow into a man... or die trying.
