Decker Zane is a 15-year-old orphaned street kid, arrested for hacking into a federal database to save a classmate from a lecherous teacher with a checkered past. However, Zane is saved from prison by a plea agreement arranged by Lieutenant Dennis Black on the condition he work for the police department as a “consultant”. Black hires him to assist in finding his daughter's killer.
Zane has psychic abilities and is preternaturally intelligent and gets impressions from inanimate objects. Black also discovers there’s no social security number associated with Zane’s name, thanks to his mother who died when Zane was 8. Zane lives with a guardian, his mother’s (former) wealthy employer, the very English, Mr. Charles Mahan.
Zane has a breakdown at the crime scene of Black’s daughter and is hospitalized. However, he reveals enough information about the killer to hurl suspicion on Black’s ex-partner, Todd Layman, thought to be dead. Lt. Black and Zane go after Layman, which puts them in mortal danger.
