Rayojini lives an idyllic life amounts the soul scapers of Taparak until she herself is initiated into their ranks. Her scaping rite is different to thousands of others in one vital respect. The guardian pursuers that are invoked to watch over her are real.
In Sacramante the artisans who are patronised by the upper echelons of Bochanegran society live in isolation. The Eloim are more than content to remain a race apart; if the majority were to know their rue nature their lives would be forfeit. Till now, the artisans have been immortal, thanks to the protection of the patron families who give their live blood in exchange for culture, but suddenly there are dying, victims of the fear's frightening mind games.
Two of their number, a painter and an actress, set out to find a soul scaper proficient enough to enter the Eloim soulscape and eradicate the cause of their despair, to repel the fear. They choose Rayojini...
