Her name was Cue but they called her Cube, not only because she was somewhat unattractive, but because, so they said, she was more than a little bit square. Unhappy and unnoticed, dismal, depressed, and dejected, she longed to be looked at and lovely and loved. But when, at last, she voiced her desires to the Good Magician Humfrey, she was perplexed at his answer. For the wizard required her to seek out a magical route to a place where her heart's desire might be found. As Cube continued on her peculiar quest, she began to assemble a triple trio of curious companions to aid her in her endeavor: The delectable and duplicitous Demoness Metria. A handsome lad named Ryver who couldn't see past his own noble nose. A winged centaur called Karia who was carried away by the sound of her own name. Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm, three young musical princesses with a knack for finding the unfindable. And Tessa and Cory, two young mundane women with a talent for sidestepping into other worlds. Together they followed a magical thread that led them all over Xanth, into the mythical realm of Phaze, and even into our own world, where Cube rescued a beautiful human woman from a very ugly situation. But still their destination eluded them, until, on a tiny cubical world, they suddenly slipped sideways into a Counter Xanth where things could be transformed into their opposites in the wink of an eye.
