Lutenist Peter Claire arrives in Denmark to become a court musician to King Christian IV. It is an odd court, with the musicians playing in a dank basement, the king's consort carrying on an adulterous affair, and the king attempting to restore Denmark's economy through various schemes.
Claire falls in love with a lady-in-waiting, and finds himself in the middle of palace intrigue.
