Set in the universe of Downbelow Station, this is the story of 452 standard humans and 40,000 programmed clones sent to colonize a new world. Promised supply ships never arrive and the colonists lose their technology and are forced to struggle against Gehenna's predominant life-form, the Calibans, dragon-like mound-builders who prove intelligent in an unusual way. The colonists struggle to survive or face extinction.
