Vladimir Globov, a prosecutor in Soviet Russia, prepares for the trial of a doctor accused of having illegally performed an abortion. Interwoven with Globov's life are the activities of his beautiful wife, Marina, and Karlinsky, the man she is having an affair with, and the revolutionary pursuits of his son Seryozha, which eventually end in disaster. The story is frequently told with fantastic or ironic elements, and the author himself becomes involved with the events.
