Summary
(From the publisher):
"There are stories within me that have to be told but which cannot be slanted at any market, because they are as they are."
Theodore Sturgeon wrote these words in a letter to his fiancée Dorothe, in May 1939. He was twenty-one years old, five months into his first intense, energetic, joyful and despairing hardscratch year as a professional writer of fiction. His stories were being accepted at McClure's, the newspaper short-story syndicate; other early stories would be published for the first time in the late forties in Amazing Stories and Weird Tales, ten years or more after they were written. A pulp science fiction audience was growing; John W. Campbell, Jr., publisher of Astounding and Unknown, would buy the first stories from this period, partly determining the audience for this wonderful storyteller who didn't set out to become a science fiction/fantasy writer.
Also includes forwards from Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke and Gene Wolfe, story notes by Paul Williams, and a single poem, "Look About You" (1940)
