Protagonist, Henry Molise (a novelist of moderate success) is called back to his hometown of San Elmo, California, believing that his long suffering and paradigmatically Italian parents are going to divorce each other. Upon his arrival he is forced and manipulated into an inexorable mission to complete a stonemasonry job with his bitter and stubborn father in the hills of California. What follows is a descent into madness, and surrealism.
