Subtitled 'Four Short Novels of Memory, Magic, Surmise and Estrangement'. The title story is the coming-of-age story of Sonny Peacock, set in rural Kansas. In 'Apartheid, Superstrings, and Mordecai Thubana', a complacently predjudiced Pretorian, in the aftermath of an auto accident, discovers that only blacks can see him. 'Cri De Coeur' tells the story of Abel Gwiazda, an emigrant aboard one of three massive colony arks, coping with intolerance toward his Down's syndrome son, in the midst of a crisis in which the colonists must choose to end their journey or risk the failure of the expedition. Finally, 'Death and Designation Among the Asadi' presents xenoanthropologist Egan Cheney's efforts to understand an alien tribe who seem to get along by mutual avoidance.
